The 2008 Major League baseball season has witnessed a number of surprises, particularly in the American League, where the Tampa Bay Rays have become the leaders of the Eastern Division and surprisingly both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are fighting for a wildcard position in September’s playoff picture.  This was not the case before the All-Star game in early July, when Boston was ahead of Tampa Bay in the standings.  Many baseball observers point to injuries to Boston’s outstanding starting pitching as one of the major factors contributing to the turnaround.  Whatever happens between now and the end of September, this year’s season has been anything but predictable and should continue to be so until the end of the regular season.
