Georgian Crises Highlights Need for Consistent U.S. Foreign Policy

Recent Russian military intrusions into the former Soviet state of Georgia is entirely unacceptable and tells the rest of the world that the Russian intent of conquest and domination has not changed since the breakup of the Soviet Union.  The Russian government is unpredictable, diplomatically saying one thing and militarily doing the opposite.  The governments of the Western World, including the United States, get caught off-guard and find very little to counteract in response to invasion and destruction.

President Bush has spoken out several times within the past week about this conflict and, in doing so, has used diplomacy to the farthest extent that is possible.  Humanitarian efforts from the United States and other Western countries have been swift and hopefully will be a positive response to the suffering peoples of Georgia.

The fact remains that Russia is and will continue to be a threat to peace, much as Iran, North Korea, and other countries who are secretive with their intentions and regard human life as expendable.  Russia remains a country with its own agendas and intentions, giving little regard for the consequences of it's actions.

Presidential candidates McCain and Obama will have to address this conflict and make their platforms clear to the American people.
