Elderly People and Assisted Living

Adults who become responsible for their aging parents need to be educated on living alternatives before assuming responsibility for their care. A good portion of the elderly are against any alternative that forces them away from their home and into an assisted living facility. In some cases the responsible family member(s) never learns of this wish and assumes that their choice will be agreed to by the elderly family member. This is not always the case and stories come to our attention of a medical professional providing assisted suicide to an elderly person who chooses to die rather than go into an assisted care residence.
I have explained my wishes very clearly to my children in the event that this choice ever has to be made by one or all of them. It is our duty and responsibility to make sure that our chosen family member(s) is aware of our decision and educated well enough on choices that will eventually have to be made.
