Poor Economy's Effects on Family

There is little to cheer about regarding the economy's performance in 2008's first quarter. Economists say that the economy actually grew by 0.6%. Most economists say that we're actually in the stages of a recession. I'm sure that we'll hear more about this situation in the coming days and weeks.
We're paying $75 for a tank of gas and nearly $200 every week for groceries. Neither of us gets a raise in pay, but we are supposed to take our $1,200 rebate check and spend to help the economy? I wonder how many of us can afford to spend freely these days.
The fact is that we don't have any "extra money". I consider us very fortunate to be able to meet our bills each month. There are a lot of people worse off than we are. Given that assessment, I would like to know how this economy is supposed to shrug off it's downward trend?
I would jump at the chance for my family to have extra cash and go out and pump up the economy with spending for a lot of things! Trouble is; we're just one of millions of middle class families that are hurting economically a lot worse than anyone in Washington knows about.
I wonder who is going to speak for the middle class family? I wonder where all this money is supposed to come from so that we can simply go out and start spending on ANYTHING?
